    Where truffle ceremonies come from<\/h2>\n

    Ceremonial use of psilocybin fungi has deep roots in Mexico. The Mazatec people of Oaxaca hold night-time healing ceremonies called veladas<\/em>, led by a curandero or curandera. The best known is Mar\u00eda Sabina, whose ceremonies became famous in the West after banker and amateur mycologist R. Gordon Wasson took part and wrote about it in Life<\/em> magazine in 1957.<\/p>\n

    Modern truffle ceremonies borrow some elements from these traditions, such as intention, music and a guide who holds the space.     What happens during a ceremony<\/h2>\n

    Every facilitator works differently, but most ceremonies follow a similar structure:<\/p>\n

    1. Intake and screening.<\/strong> A questionnaire or conversation about your health, medication and mental health history, days or weeks in advance.<\/li>\n
    2. Preparation.<\/strong> Light meals, no alcohol and enough sleep in the days before. Many facilitators also ask you to think about your intention.<\/li>\n
    3. Opening.<\/strong> A short circle or conversation in which everyone shares their intention and the facilitator explains the practical agreements.<\/li>\n
    4. Taking the truffles.<\/strong> Often chewed or prepared as tea. The amount depends on the variety, the person and the setting.<\/li>\n
    5. The journey.<\/strong> Roughly 4 to 6 hours. Most people lie down with eyeshades and music. The facilitator stays present and sober.<\/li>\n
    6. Closing.<\/strong> A calm return, something light to eat and a closing circle.<\/li>\n
    7. Integration.<\/strong> A follow-up conversation in the days after to talk about what came up.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The role of the facilitator<\/h2>\n

      A facilitator is there for your safety and to “hold the space”: keeping the setting calm, helping when things get difficult and making sure nobody is left alone. A good facilitator does not tell you what to experience.<\/p>\n
