Short answer: magic mushrooms are not legal in Amsterdam. Fresh and dried psilocybin mushrooms have been banned in the whole of the Netherlands since 1 December 2008. Magic truffles are a different growth form of the fungus, fall outside that ban and are sold legally to adults in Amsterdam smartshops and online.

    Are magic mushrooms legal in Amsterdam?

    No. Until 2008, Dutch smartshops sold fresh magic mushrooms. Since 1 December 2008, psilocybin mushrooms are on the list of banned substances in the Dutch Opium Act, and that applies in Amsterdam just as in the rest of the country. Selling, buying or possessing fresh or dried magic mushrooms is not allowed. For the full legal background, see are magic truffles legal in the Netherlands.

    What you do see in Amsterdam shops today are magic truffles and mushroom grow kits.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”et_body_layout”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”et_body_layout”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”et_body_layout” text_font_size=”16px” link_font=”|700|||||||” module_id=”truffles”]

    Why magic truffles are legal

    Magic truffles (sclerotia) are a compact, underground growth form of certain psilocybin fungi. The 2008 ban named the mushrooms, not the sclerotia, so fresh truffles remained legal to sell to adults. They contain the same active compounds, psilocybin and psilocin.
