Yes. Magic truffles are legal in the Netherlands, and any adult can buy them freely. They sit in a different legal category from magic mushrooms. A truffle is the underground part of the fungus, called a sclerotium, and Dutch law does not treat sclerotia as a banned mushroom under the Opium Act. That one distinction is why a smartshop in Amsterdam, or a Dutch webshop like Mindrush, can sell fresh truffles openly while mushrooms stay prohibited. Below we explain the law in plain terms, what changed in 2008, whether truffles can be shipped to the rest of the EU, and how to choose and use them responsibly.

Are magic truffles legal in the Netherlands?
Yes. Fresh magic truffles are fully legal to buy, own and use in the Netherlands for adults aged 18 and over. They are sold as a food product and fall under the supervision of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), the same body that checks ordinary groceries. Because truffles are classed as sclerotia rather than mushrooms, they were never included in the Dutch mushroom ban, so they remain openly available in smartshops and from licensed Dutch webshops.
Here is the status at a glance:
| Product | Legal in the Netherlands? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Magic truffles (sclerotia) | Yes | Not classed as a mushroom under the Opium Act. Sold as food and checked by the NVWA. |
| Magic mushrooms (fresh or dried) | No | Banned under the Opium Act since 2008. |
| Grow kits | Yes | The kit itself is legal to sell and own. |

Why are truffles legal when magic mushrooms are banned?
It comes down to biology and the exact wording of the law. Psilocybin is produced by the same organism, but it shows up in two different structures. Mushrooms are the fruiting body that grows above ground. Truffles are sclerotia, a dense underground mass the fungus forms to store energy. They contain the same active compounds, yet they are physically a different part of the organism.
In 2008 the Netherlands added fresh and dried magic mushrooms to the Opium Act and banned them. The legislation named mushrooms specifically and did not cover sclerotia, so truffles stayed legal. That is the whole reason the psilocybin experience is still openly and legally available in the Netherlands today, just in truffle form rather than mushroom form. You can read more about the wider legal status of psilocybin worldwide, and see our own breakdown of the difference between magic mushrooms and magic truffles.
Can you buy magic truffles in Amsterdam?
Yes. Licensed smartshops across Amsterdam sell fresh truffles over the counter to anyone aged 18 or over, and it is one of the most common purchases visitors make. You will find a range of strengths, usually with a simple strength scale on each pack.
You do not need to fly to Amsterdam, though. The same fresh, Dutch-grown truffles are available online and shipped to your door. Buying from a licensed Dutch webshop gives you honest strength guidance, clear dosing information and proper cold-chain packaging, which is harder to judge on a busy shopping street.

Can magic truffles be shipped across the EU?
In most cases, yes. Under EU Regulation 2019/515, the principle of mutual recognition means a product that is legally sold in one member state may in principle be offered in others. Because psilocybin truffles are produced and sold legally in the Netherlands as a food product, that framework can apply to shipments within the EU.
Mindrush ships fresh truffles to 23 EU countries in plain, unbranded packaging with Track and Trace. We currently do not ship to Denmark, Finland or Hungary, and we do not ship to non-EU destinations such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland or Norway. Local rules still vary, so you remain responsible for the regulations in your own country. Every order is covered by our delivery guarantee: if a parcel is lost, we reship or refund.

How do you use magic truffles safely?
Legal does not mean risk free, so a little care goes a long way. The golden rule is simple: start low, and build up next time if you want to. You can always take more, but you can never take less once you have started. Use them in a calm, familiar setting, ideally with a sober trip sitter, and avoid alcohol and other substances. The dose guidance below is based on fresh truffles.
| Level | Fresh truffles | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Microdose | around 1 g | No trip. A subtle lift for focus and mood. |
| Light | 4 to 6 g | A gentle introduction to a variety. |
| Medium | 7 to 10 g | A clear, visual psychedelic experience. |
| Strong | 10 to 15 g | An intense, deep journey for experienced users. |
Effects vary from person to person and depend on your setting. Do not use truffles if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication, or have a mental health condition, and never use them before driving. For adults 18 and over only. This is general information, not medical advice. For a full walkthrough, read our guide on how to use truffles.
