Short answer: if you want to buy magic mushrooms online, you will mostly find two legal routes from the Netherlands: magic truffles (the underground part of the same fungi, ready to use) and magic mushroom grow kits (living mycelium that grows mushrooms at home). Fresh and dried magic mushrooms themselves have been banned in the Netherlands since 2008. What can you actually buy online?
Searches like “buy magic shrooms” or “magic mushrooms online” usually lead to three kinds of products:
- Magic truffles. Sclerotia: compact, nut-like growths that form underground. They contain psilocybin and psilocin, the same compounds as magic mushrooms. In the Netherlands they were not included in the 2008 ban and are sold legally.
- Grow kits. A box of substrate already colonised by mycelium. You add water, keep it warm and the kit produces mushrooms over several weeks.
- Fresh or dried mushrooms. These fall under the Dutch Opium Act since 1 December 2008. A reputable Dutch shop will not sell them.
Magic truffles: ready to use
Truffles are the easiest option if you want something you can use without any preparation or waiting. They come vacuum-packed in fixed portions and differ per variety in size, texture and how strong they are usually described. A grow kit is for people who enjoy the process. The kit contains mycelium that is already fully grown through the substrate, so there is no sterile work involved. You hydrate the kit, place it in a warm spot (a heat mat helps in colder rooms) and wait for the first mushrooms to appear. A healthy kit can produce more than one harvest, called flushes.

How to recognise a reliable online shop
- Clear product information. Variety, weight and storage advice on every product page.
- Honest about where it ships. A good shop lists the countries it delivers to instead of promising “worldwide”.
- Discreet, vacuum-sealed packaging. Truffles stay fresh and the parcel does not reveal what is inside.
- Real reviews. Independent reviews from verified buyers say more than a list of testimonials.
- Safety information. A responsible seller explains risks, not only the experience.
One thing to avoid completely: picking wild mushrooms yourself. The EU drugs agency points out that many psilocybin mushrooms are small and brown and are easily confused with inedible or poisonous species.
Staying safe
Psilocybin usually starts to work within about 30 minutes and the effects last roughly 4 to 6 hours. How it feels depends a lot on the amount, your mood, earlier experience and the place you are in. Difficult experiences with anxiety or panic do happen, and in rare cases people end up needing medical help.
- Start low, especially the first time, and do not take more because you feel nothing yet.
- Choose a calm, familiar place and have a sober person with you.
- Do not combine with alcohol, other drugs or medication such as antidepressants without medical advice.
- Never drive or go into traffic.
- Skip it if you or close family have a history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, if you are pregnant, or if you are under 18.
